Street Art near the Citadel
There is a lot of street art in Ecuador. While a lot of it looks like graffiti, most here don’t see it that way. There is wall art, like the pictures here, free speech art often in the form of political or religious exuberances, and other – which looks like graffiti to me. Regardless, locals seem to mostly allow and ignore the public displays.
There are a lot of walls here, every house is walled, gated and fenced. The hills require retaining walls and there are a LOT of long, tall flights of steps. So, there are a lot of opportunities for artists.
For the most part, later artists seems to honor prior artist’s work. The mural depicted in these pictures has been there since 2020. It starts at the bottom of a long, long stairway and ends about 2/3 of the way up. It is near a catholic school and university.
