La Bajada Mesa and La Bajada Hill. The escarpment hides the 23 hairpin turns one of the most harrowing miles of the El Camino Real - the road from Mexico City to San Juan Puelbo, NM. This road was built and used between 1598 and 1932. Most of the road is gone now, but the road up the escarpment is still there. It has received little maintenance since the 1930's but is still accessible by off road capable motorcycle, high clearance four wheel drive, bicycle or on foot. I went from top to bottom on my KLR650. The Mesa is criss-crossed by fading tracks the wagons and caravans made after successfully gaining the top of the mesa heading north towards Santa Fe. The land is BLM or National Forest land and is accessible - off road capable vehicle is required. There are no services.
